Frequently asked questions

What is a DICOM file?

DICOM (.dcm) is the standard format used by hospital scanners for CT, MRI and X-ray images. It stores the image together with acquisition metadata, which is why it does not open in ordinary photo software.

Why would I convert DICOM to JPG?

JPG and PNG open anywhere — email, phones, documents, presentations. Converting is the usual way to share a single image with someone who has no medical imaging software.

Does converting lose image information?

Yes. DICOM stores a far wider range of grey values than JPG or PNG can hold, and the conversion flattens it to what the selected window shows. Converted files are for viewing and sharing, not for clinical assessment — keep the original .dcm.

What does the window preset do?

CT data covers a range far wider than a screen can display, so a window selects which part of it becomes visible. Lung, soft tissue, bone and brain presets are the standard ranges; pick the one matching what you want to see, or the image will look washed out or too dark.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Drop multiple files and each is converted separately with the same format and quality settings.

My file has no extension — will it work?

Usually yes. Hospital discs often store DICOM files without an extension, and the tool reads the file contents rather than the name.
